On 8th July, Maykn officially launched as the marketing agency for learning brands to a packed room of leaders from across marketing, publishing, education and culture.

Taking place in London’s vibrant Design District in North Greenwich, the event brought together senior professionals from across publishing, education and learning for an evening of drinks, networking and panel discussion. It celebrated the launch of Maykn as the refreshed agency brand from parent company BookMachine, explored the agency’s mission, and united people who believe learning has the power to move culture forward – and that marketing in this space should earn attention with integrity.

Launching the Learning Economy

A key element of the launch was to define this network of people, brands and sectors under the ‘Learning Economy’ umbrella – what we see as the companies and organisations that help people learn, think, develop skills, explore ideas, and expand their understanding of the world.

Attendees from Boydell & Brewer, Nosy Crow, Macmillan Learning, Pearson, SAGE Publications, Cambridge University Press & Assessment, BESA, TES, Winning With Numbers, SchoolDash, Everway, TeacherMatic, TeacherTapp, Osborne Co-operative Trust, City & Guilds, Empathy Lab, LoveReading, and Fonetti joined us to explore how we can unify our missions to reach the audiences who matter most, and communicate with clarity, honesty, and impact.

The room was filled with relevant conversation, genuine connection and overlapping purpose between industries and individuals who previously hadn’t had the opportunity to meet at other events.

Bringing the future of learning into focus

Following an introduction to the Maykn manifesto by Gavin Summers, fellow Maykn Co-Founder Laura Summers chaired a conversation with Seshni Jacobs (Hachette Learning), Rose Luckin (University College London & Educate Ventures Research) and Hugh Viney (Minerva Virtual Academy) to delve into the themes and issues that connect the teams and brands within the learning ecosystem.

The discussion highlighted that while AI is likely to transform how we learn, it shouldn’t replace what makes learning meaningful. Rather than seeing artificial intelligence as a threat to education, the panel encouraged us to think about how it can free everyone up to do more of what only humans can do. We focussed on discussing the role of relationships, if nurturing curiosity all whilst developing  critical thinking skills. Perhaps most importantly, the panel reminded us that some aspects of learning remain timeless. Curiosity, motivation, belonging, human connection and the joy of discovering something new are just as essential today as they have always been.

We also had some excellent questions relating to the role adults should play in guiding young people’s use of AI, and how marketers can keep up as technology continues to evolve at such a rapid pace. The discussion reinforced the need to embrace innovation while remaining thoughtful about how, when and why we use it

Spotlighting the Maykn brand and agency team

The event also acted as a celebration of our expert team of marketers, and a showcase of the work behind-the-scenes developing the visual identity, mission and values of the Maykn agency brand.

A print newspaper, Maykn Notes, arranged on a table at the Maykn launch event.
Maykn Notes: The first issue of our quarterly print newspaper.

The launch saw the distribution of the first issue of our quarterly print newspaper Maykn Notes to our attendees. The paper spotlights our clients, campaigns, and expertise, showcases the breadth of the Learning Economy category, and outlines how brands can inspire curiosity, earn trust and connect with learners with Maykn as their partner.

Our team was also able to meet in-person with the people playing an instrumental role in the future of learning, culture and curiosity, tap into the pressures and challenges facing brands in this space, and build on their knowledge of the marketing and communications strategies and approaches already in play.
